Security

A software bill of materials is a control, not paperwork

If you cannot list what you shipped, you cannot answer for it when a component is found vulnerable.

WF-INS-2025-02

A software bill of materials is often filed and forgotten. That is a waste of the one artifact that answers the question every program eventually gets asked. What is in this system, and where did it come from.

We generate the bill of materials on every build, not as a release-day formality. Dependencies are locked. The list is produced by the pipeline, so it reflects what actually shipped rather than what someone remembered to write down.

When a component is later found vulnerable, the response is a lookup, not an investigation. The teams that struggle in that moment are the ones treating the bill of materials as compliance paperwork rather than an operational record.

The value is not the document. It is being able to answer quickly and truthfully.
